About NVMe dedicated server

NVMe replaces SATA/SAS as the default storage tier for anything performance-sensitive. Random 4K IOPS 100-500× higher than SATA SSD, sequential throughput 5-10× higher, sub-100 μs latency vs sub-ms SATA — the difference matters wherever you're not purely sequential.

Every plan in our dedicated catalogue includes NVMe as standard boot storage — 2× 512 GB or 2× 1 TB in RAID-1. Larger arrays (4× 1.92 TB / 6× 3.84 TB / 8× 7.68 TB / 4× 15.36 TB) available on Platinum 8168 and custom EPYC builds. Bay-level configurability on the 8168 tier.

Where NVMe pays off most: OLTP databases (Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB — 10-50× QPS increase for random-heavy workloads), gaming (map loading, asset streaming), real-time analytics (ClickHouse, DuckDB), object storage backends (Ceph OSDs, MinIO), Docker/Kubernetes hot layers.

Where NVMe is overkill: mostly-sequential bulk storage (media libraries, backup targets, cold archive) — SATA HDD at $1.40/TB-month beats NVMe at $22/TB-month by 15×. For hybrid workloads we build NVMe hot tier + HDD bulk with ZFS L2ARC caching.

Frequently asked questions

Gen3 vs Gen4 NVMe — how much faster?

Gen4 is ~2× peak sequential throughput (7 GB/s vs 3.5 GB/s) and slightly better random IOPS. Real-world workloads: 20-40% faster overall on Gen4. Gen5 available on newer EPYC Genoa platforms.

Can I get RAID on NVMe?

Yes — hardware RAID via Broadcom 9500-series NVMe controllers (RAID 0/1/5/6/10) or software RAID via ZFS/mdraid/Btrfs. We recommend ZFS RAID-Z2 for larger pools.

How reliable is NVMe long-term?

Enterprise NVMe (Samsung PM9A3, Micron 7450, Kioxia CD8) rated 3-5 DWPD (drive writes per day) over 5 years. That's ~35 PB of writes for a 3.84 TB drive — more than most workloads will ever produce.
