About Video transcoding server
Real-time video transcoding is CPU-brutal on x264 — pushing 1080p H.264 at 8 Mbps with medium preset burns 4-6 CPU cores per stream. NVENC on modern NVIDIA GPUs does the same in a fraction of the power draw, freeing CPUs for stream ingest, packaging and delivery.
On a single RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell we routinely see 8-12 concurrent 1080p ABR ladders (each ladder = 4-5 rungs: 240p/360p/480p/720p/1080p) in HLS output. RTX PRO 6000 scales to 30-50 SD ladders or 20+ HD ladders. Both GPUs support 8-bit and 10-bit H.264 / HEVC / AV1 encoding.
Typical customers: IPTV panels doing 30-60 live channels with ABR, tube sites processing user uploads, VOD platforms with per-title bitrate ladders, live event streaming (sports, esports, church broadcasts). One PRO 6000 box replaces 3-4 CPU-transcode nodes at similar throughput.

Frequently asked questions
NVENC vs CPU x264 — quality difference?
NVENC HEVC at "quality" preset produces output ~5-10% larger than x265 "medium" for the same visual quality. NVENC AV1 is significantly better than NVENC HEVC. Trade-off: 10× more streams per box vs slight quality gap.
Can I do 4K transcoding?
Yes. RTX PRO 4500 handles 2-3 concurrent 4K H.265 streams, RTX PRO 6000 handles 6-8. For 4K AV1, halve those numbers.
Does the RTX PRO series have NVENC restrictions?
No — RTX PRO is the professional line, no session limits. Consumer RTX 4090 has a 3-session limit which we can lift with the NVIDIA unlock patch on your responsibility.
